SOP Writing Practice

A Standard Operating Procedure documents how a task should be performed so that anyone qualified can do it the same way, every time. Good SOPs protect quality, safety, and consistency — bad ones create risk.

What every SOP includes

  • Purpose — what the SOP is for
  • Scope — who and what it applies to
  • Materials — anything the reader needs to have
  • Safety — warnings before anything else
  • Procedure — the numbered steps
  • Verification — how you know it's done correctly
  • Notes — everything else that helps

How to practice

Take a task you already know how to do at work, and produce an SOP a new hire could follow. Then produce one for a task you don't know as well — you'll find gaps in your understanding, which is exactly the point.
