Troubleshooting Guide Practice
Troubleshooting documentation solves a specific problem: something is wrong and the reader needs to fix it. Good troubleshooting is ordered by likelihood and effort — the reader tries the easy things first.
Structure of a troubleshooting guide
- State the problem clearly.
- List the most common causes in order.
- For each cause, give a corrective action.
- Say when the reader should stop and escalate.
Practice scenario
Given the problem "Printer connected but documents aren't printing," write a five-step guide. Order it by what the reader should try first. Include escalation.
Try it
Practice this in a timed session.
Realistic source material, a task timer, and a scored result.
